Microsoft is ruining Windows. It just keeps getting worse. Whether it be their insistence on AI and cloud garbage, or just a general sense of incompetence, I can’t help but feel like the operating system has seen better days.
Normally I wouldn’t care too much, big tech ruins another thing, whatever.
But the problem is Microsoft has such a dominant market share that you can’t really escape them.
I guess unless you use a Mac or something I don’t know.

Windows 7 was windows peak.
I don’t know how they fucked up so bad since then.
Well. I know. Capitalism breed innovation, what they don’t say is that it breeds like the european monarchy.
I just bought a new laptop for a family member. It wasn’t very expensive, but hardware now is generally amazing. It has Windows 11. My 12 year old laptop running Windows 7 is faster for most tasks, despite far inferior hardware. Plus search actually works in 7, it’s better organized, it doesn’t come with a ton of junk you need to disable or remove (good god the default start menu on 10 is a mess), and it doesn’t look like they designed the UI over the weekend. I kept waiting for the typical MS move of fixing the dumb crap they added, but with 11 it’s clear that they’re doubling down.
Switched to full time Arch because I didn’t want to run Windows Privacy Invasion Goes to 11. And it’s been pretty good. Valve gets a big “thank you” for their contributions to WINE and making gaming on Linux nearly as seamless as Windows.
It’s probably still true that “Next year” will be the year of Linux on the desktop, and it will be for several more years to come. But, it’s starting to feel like cracks are forming in the Microsoft wall.
Oh, windows has definitely seen better days in the past. It’s not irony either, it’s just a matter of looking at the amount of “features” nobody asked for that they push onto users anyway. Liked the XP-7 start menu? Too bad, now you’re stuck with whatever. That simple calculator program? Get a load of this UWP style calculator instead! Don’t want auto anti-aliasing with MSPaint’s brush? Fuck you, it’s there and you won’t disable it. Liked Solitaire and Freecell ad-free? HAHA GET REKT
Yeah I am so glad I switched to GNU/Linux years ago, Have to keep supporting closed OSes at work with our software and with each release they are just getting worse and worse, while GNU/Linux just keeps getting better.
I started daily driving Linux when I built my computer last year because M$ demanded I pay $200 for a new license for software that I had already paid for. Haven’t looked back since, and it’s been a great machine. I run Arch, by the way.
