To be honest, I don’t think I would mind ad supported YouTube. For me, it’s the obvious scam ads that Google makes it really hard and obtuse to report that made me block them indiscriminately.

If it was regulated like TV commercials are, I don’t think I would’ve minded too much. Twitch has basically no scam ads in my experience, I just get a lot of gaming-related advertising which makes sense for a gaming-centric streaming site. Quality over quantity (at least by advertising standards, lol.)

Of course, this is just YouTube and Twitch. The rest of the Internet is pretty fucking awful and they’ll need to clean up how advertising is handled before people even think about giving up their adblockers. Yeah, ads are annoying, but people gotta eat.

oh god. A friend of mine who works in IT just had to deal with them and their customer support, they had him wipe the drive and now they’re wondering why they can’t get logs from Windows anymore.

I’ll happily buy my games on Steam just for the convenience of Steam Cloud (wrt one-click Linux gaming: there’s an effort to standardise custom Proton version loading iirc which Heroic Launcher is part of), but yeah - let’s not forget that Steam had its dark days. You reminded me of NerdCubed’s rant in 2015 about Greenlight and such that led to him dropping his Curator page at the time, and I remembered quite a bit of cheering in reaction to the Epic Games Store announcement around 2018/19 (before all the exclusivity shit afterwards).

Cyberpunk 2077 worked for me in a similar fashion, even on Linux funnily enough.

AFAIK, HDR was theorised to have been disabled due to problems on AMD GPUs, as said by a third-party driver developer (iVRy). They also said that issues with USB communication was why they weren’t able to do it properly either with the adapter having a more direct connection. The adapter should be able to support it when SteamVR is updated, so hopefully Sony releases firmware updates for it.

I love my PSVR2, but I won’t lie, the Quest 3 is more competitive. To get the most out of your PSVR2 before the adapter comes out (which is 2 months), you’ll need a PS5 which is about £300-500. If you’re strapped for cash, it’s going to be a hard sell to get them together whereas you can buy a Quest 2 or even the third one for much cheaper right now, with the PC support both in wired and wireless mode (Steam Link supports VR games on the recent Quest lineup)

That being said, if you hate Facebook more than you hate Sony and you already have a PS5 and know what games you want for it, fuck it - go get it. It’s a solid headset. Go get No Man’s Sky too for it, as a recommendation. It’s a brilliant game in VR if you’re into space exploration.

I try to get physical where I can, but I’m tempted to go for digital and then brush up on my data hygiene instead due to space and money. Even if it’s as simple as hooking up a hard drive to another computer, that is still better than not backing my music up at all.

Oh I know Lunduke. Used to enjoy his Linux Sucks speeches before he went a bit down the deeper end. That being said, I don’t think said friend is really in-tune with that sort of politics in the Linux community, so I don’t know if that’s the case. It’s probably the fact Chris uses Arch as a main OS, while my friend tried it, hated it then used Fedora tbh.

I’ve had issues with iwlwifi just panicking but I think that’s just Intel being a bit shit, to be honest. Everything else - even the RGB on my system - works perfectly fine.

I think the bigger issue is software support. Even the “Linux desktop” is good. But if people prefer an app that’s exclusive to Windows or Mac, and the native alternatives aren’t cutting it for them, then adoption will become an issue for them. I’m in that camp because of MusicBee, it has these random bouts of lag on WINE that does not exist on Windows and has font redirection problems, so I’m stuck to Windows until WINE improves (though I have considered becoming a maintainer on WineHQ for that…)

I think the problem is both technical and cultural. I use both Mastodon and Bluesky pretty regularly, and am dipping my toes back into Lemmy after the instance I used has seemingly died. A lot of the technical and cultural problems the fediverse and specifically Mastodon - being the most well-known ActivityPub project - has, that made people flock to Bluesky instead (during a time when invite codes were needed, adding a layer of friction to joining Bluesky at the time), is well-documented on this post by Erin Kissane.

The tl;dr: fractured federation amongst other problems, and a very scoldy audience turned these people away from Mastodon.

Hell I consider myself a very techy nerd, but I moved Mastodon instances after being frustrated with the inherent lossiness of federation with ActivityPub on the Masto instance I used to be on, which sucks because the instance I was on had no other problems.

Don’t know anything about Chris Titus Tech as a person (friend of mine says he’s a bit crazy but that’s it I guess?), but they probably see negativity about Linux and downvote. The title seems to be bad at explaining the video too.

This. Sounds similar to a problem I had on my Intel chip (AX210) though I found out iwlwifi was panicking using dmesg. Probably would’ve been easier to use journalctl.

Probably not for a few versions, I’m afraid, though vertical tabs (which was part of the feature set they wanted to add) is already in nightly so it’s worth giving that a test every now and again in case tab groups make it.

Yeah, this is why I get very skeptical or even dismissive of Glaze/Nightshade working. It’s an interesting concept, using machine learning/generative AI to “poison” the models, but I’ll have to believe it when I see it. I see people defending it by saying it has an academic paper - that doesn’t mean anything on its own. It still needs to be independently evaulated.

Saw a post on Bluesky from someone in tech saying that eventually, if it’s human-viewable it’ll also be computer-viewable, and there’s simply no working around that, wonder if you agree on that or not.

Not that Epic is good (not in the slightest) but yeah, I agree. The old instance I was on broke, and it was pretty blissful not dealing with the Linux/fediverse fanboys.

Ubuntu in the early 2010s, with GNOME 2 and Compiz. The Compiz era of desktops was real fun and I’d love for that to come back with a vengeance. MATE is working on Wayland support with Wayfire (essentially like Compiz but for Wayland) as the compositor AFAIK, so it might very well come back and be improved (apparently the Compiz codebase is… not great?)

I should give the immutable distros a try when I’m not reliant on VMware. Though all that said, I’ve been using Fedora KDE Spin lately, and it hasn’t really been a problem either.

Just got back into Lemmy after a few months of not coming in (joined during the Reddit API protests), and yeah it really is lmao.

If it’s the firmware update itself that’s faulty, the faulty update could’ve been applied on Linux, as HP uploads their updates to LVFS. If it’s the process that’s faulty (i.e. application corrupts memory while writing the flash), then the commenter might have a point given that Windows Update doesn’t discriminate between working and broken updates.
