  • As a complete military noob: how does this affect the current conflict? By my naïve guess, it slows down the advance for a while, but ideally a well organised army has someone to stand in very shortly to minimise the effect. I understand it might lower the level of expertise, but considering such a large force (as in, many to pick from) I expect around the same level of competence from a substitute. Is it actually more significant than that? Are there other aspects I missed?

EDIT: Thank you all for the insights! It seems like it does have a tangible effect, and it actually takes longer to replace leadership than I anticipated. A life is a life, and nobody should die like this (especially when some power hungry megalomaniac sends you to), but you all helped me appreciate this news more, regardless.

  • And this is where unregulated capitalism and the constant craze for GROWTH GROWTH GROWTH comes into the picture. With a failing demographic AND an aging society, economic collapse is inevitable. I mean, it could be just a long, smooth slope in theory, but not with this dystopian economic system where you have already spent the money you’re getting back in 10 years’ time, with the greedy shareholders dictating everything.

I mean, these demographic changes will happen regardless, but the effects of currently having such a flawed and short sighted system will be painfully drastic.

  • I hate the vile stuff that the Hungarian government has/had been doing in the past fifteen (!) years, but if there has ever been a chance to overthrow them, it’s now(ish). I know that a year is still a pretty long time, and I’m sure they will switch to overdrive now that they feel it might be their last year, at least in the 2/3 majority, but there’s another election coming in April 2026. I would hate it if the country got expunged juuuust before a possible change of regime, even if that change probably won’t be Earth shattering.

I just hope the EU comes up with some creative solution to keep these evil autocrats at bay for the “little” time until then.

  • “Hungary would be a better place if you didn’t beat out the fuse, but each other’s” - or “Hungary would be a better place if you’d beat each other’s instead of the fuse”.

By the way, OP accidentally overlooked the country/place translation, but I’m 100% sure they know, otherwise.

Boring explanation in the spoiler box:

    spoiler

To jack off = to beat (it) out/off in Hungarian. E.g. “I beat out/off my dick to this picture of a daisy”.

To blow the fuse (…box?) = to beat out/off the fuse in Hungarian. Beat might not be the best translation, and it could be closer to ‘slam’ or ‘pop’ or something, but we use the same word (‘ver’ / ‘beat’) in both cases.

We also use the term ‘blow the fuse’ when talking about having enough of something that grinds your gears. Like, “I could still tolerate that ignorant knob, but when he started talking about all the doctors of the world conspiring, that blew the fuse for me. (‘beat out/off the fuse for me’)” - kind of when you lose it.

  • Despite the 2/3 majority in parliament, the actual vote head counts were closer to a 45/55 (or 48/52, depending on the source) at the last few elections. This is due to severe gerrymandering, excessive propaganda, oppressing opposition and independent media outlets, and intentionally cutting education funds.

But I’m also both saddened and infuriated by the fact that while it’s not the majority, still, HALF of the fucking country still supports this vile, hateful, corrupt, literally evil government.

I guess there’s no hope for the country, and it will soon devolve into another Belarus.

  • I don’t know the source of this list, but #15 actually means ‘shit’ (like with several other languages in the comment).

However, I understand it’s not easy, because I wouldn’t say there is a straight equivalent of it in the language. You could go for ‘picsa’, but that’s often typically used for women, or it’s closer in meaning to the english ‘bitch’. ‘Pöcs’ has a similar vibe when used specifically on males, but it’s much closer to being ‘prick’. Then there’s ‘köcsög’, which has a closer vibe to ‘scumbag’, but at least not so gender specific. I guess it’s situational.
