  • This is the first time I think I a more convinced that Meta joining isn’t in the Fediverse’s best interest. The front end is where the users “go”, they don’t know about the backend. If the front end points to new places, they would have no idea. So Fediverse going to meta, just gives meta users access to more of the internet, at the pleasure of meta’s whims. It’s partially an issue with the Fediverse model of giving admins power over the communities and users that they host. That, extended to Meta, shows the cracks the most, I think.

  • The video conferencing on Matrix has been really good for me so far. FOSSDEM 2022 was hosted on it and that really sold me on Matrix as a solution tbh. The recorded talks played smooth, and the chats worked no issues, while the break rooms gave me that genuine “I’m actually at a conference” feel, because it was so easy to just join a room and talk with our cameras on and everything.

Teams has been mostly up and working for me, but we have “sorry teams wasn’t working” issues all the time, so that bar is low to me. Even more, matrix better fits larger organizations that frankly should be using the federated approach for a lot of things, and stop trying to have IT policies that fits hundreds of thousands of employees over large geospatial distances.

  • No, I mean it, they really have taken the models of the British Empire and the American Empires and expanded them in a way neither at their heights could ever justify nor imagine. Surveillance system sales to authoritarian governments? Selling surveillance in other countries?! Like the CIA look like idiots spending money to get surveillance in other countries on that one. Plus they get to support the dictators keeping the peasants sending raw resources to China!

Purposely loaning money to countries with bad credit histories for leverage to get them to build ports for the Chinese empire’s trade network?! Britten spent so much time and money fighting wars, and colonizing just to be our shined on that.

And let’s not even get to started on the levels of control business have over workers there. The US robber barons use the State here looks like child’s play to the anti-union, anti-solidarity work done by the CCP. A giant union ran by the largest capitalist in the country? With authorities able to crack down on grassroots organizing on the opposite side, and the ability to send slaves from regions in need of “reeducation” all around the country. Makes the US look practically socialist on some fronts (we aren’t and have a good way to go).
