  • Why not both? Yeah, dams cause continued ecological damage and I don’t think we should be building more of them, but let’s leave them in place until they can be replaced with proper renewables.

But yeah, you’re 100% correct that that shit should have been nationalized yesterday. Unfortunately all it takes is a conservative-majority (low-c conservative for an international audience) to re-privatize it and let their buddies buy it at a discount. That seems to be what’s happening globally. I’m starting to think the best way forward for most things related to the common good are the formation of non-profits or worker’s co-ops but that’s a non-starter in something as large-scale as baseline power generation.

  • I’d looove to see this but an international plan to stop climate change is also technically possible but I’m not gonna get my hopes up based on what we’ve seen in that arena thus far. That latter is also an outright existential threat to our species.

It’s also technically possible that anyone can win the lottery but the odds are decidedly stacked against them.

I hate that I’m so goddamn pessimistic about this stuff, but it’s hard to see a path to betterment until shit really hits the fan in catastrophic ways. (Moreso than we’ve seen thus far.) Between the rich holding ridiculous power and the 30-40% of the population they’ve utterly brainwashed, an optimistic future seems pretty far fetched. Not that we shouldn’t try, of course, I’m just venting my frustrations. That said, as an elder millenial, I have a good degree of hope for the younger generations. Overall they seem much more progressive and don’t buy into the illusions about our current system that we do.

I spent sooooo much of my teens and early 20s involved in leftist activism and spent the next decade utterly apathetic as we never seemed to accomplish much of anything. Now I’m just trying to get by and help those who I directly have the power to help, such as coworkers and the kids in my life.

  • I was going to make a joke about this costing $6000/hit, then I read this:

Activists have urged Gilead to ensure that people in countries where low- and middle-incomes predominate can get access to lenacapavir. The company has long faced criticism over the price of its HIV medicines. Descovy usage carries a list price of $26,000 a year.

So based on their current HIV medicine, my joke answer was less than half of what it’ll likely actually cost (as you need two hits a year).

What a ridiculous world we live in.

  • I actually very recently tried it. I’m sure it’s great but something about the UI or maybe general paradigm switch versus apps like Notion really confused me. It looks great though, so I’m sure I’ll give it another go sometime when I have a bit more time to really learn it. Nonetheless, I appreciate the recommendation!

  • Yeah, having to split your gear up between two workplaces gets exhausting. For a long time I was a self-employed contractor primarily working for one company and I’d never have the right tool or part where I needed it. I now work full-time for that company and most of the gear stays in one place and is a lot more manageable. Plus, I set up a co-management agreement with an IT company that is literally our upstairs neighbor so if there’s a hardware problem that needs to be fixed in a hurry on a day I’m working from home I can just escalate the ticket to them instead of driving into the office.

But yeah, there’s absolutely no one size fits all approach to every workplace or specific job. I’ve been pushing for more flexibility there at my office for other roles because of that.

  • You’re getting downvoted here, but your anecdotal evidence matches my own. This is how I set my own schedule by choice. I get my “real” work done when I work from home, while the 2 in-office days are mostly spent in meetings, training other staff, and stuff that’s easier to do in person (hardware troubleshooting).

I get that this isn’t the case for everyone though, and many people would be more productive predominantly working from home.
