First, thanks for creating this community!
I liked about https://old.reddit.com/r/xkcd/ that you can expand the comic, even if the full URL was submitted (not just the image URL). This way, I could either peek the comic but stay where I am, or open the URL and still go to the XKCD site.
Recent example posts which do that:
- xkcd 2794: Alphabet Notes
- xkcd 2793: Garden Path Sentence
- xkcd 2792: Summer Solstice
Here, posted comics look as if an image could be expanded, but it redirects me to XKCD instead.
Not sure how /r/xkcd did this. Any chance we can do a similar thing here?
This post is old, but for what it’s worth, the sync app handles xkcd links exceptionally well.
I think they just hotlinked to the image, that said, you’d lose the alt text by doing so.
Just tried making a new post that hotlinks the image instead of the html page, which I think is the behavior you were looking for.
I haven’t figured out relative links for posts so just reload !xkcd@lemmy.world it’ll be there.Found it; https://lemmy.world/post/848046
It achieves an expandable picture, yes. But it is only a picture.
When examining xkcd 2794 on the other site, I can note two differences:
- The post does link to https://xkcd.com/2794/, not just to something.png
- The expanded post includes the alt-text, but it seems to be part of the image. There is no manual text added. Besides, on the other site, you cannot post both a link and accompanying text.
There is also an xkcd_bot, which seems to include this format to each post:
Mobile Version! [link]
Direct image link: Alphabet Notes [link]
Mouseover text: Listen, you’re very cute, but if you rearrange the alphabet to put U and I together it will RUIN the spacing!
Don’t get it? explain xkcd [link]
Not sure if this bot is related to the image/URL behavior.
I especially liked that you can peek the image, but the post still refers to the full XKCD URL. And you also get the alt text, which I didn’t notice at first.
I think what you’re describing is a feature of whatever client you’re using for reddit. (I know Relay does/did that, RES likely does so too).
If I use just a browser, the 2794 post that’s on reddit is the same behavior as here: tiny preview, no peek, link straight to the pageOh, you’re right. I deleted my account yesterday, so deinstalling RES was only a logical next step. Yes, that seemed to be a RES feature.
