Unfortunately, the article doesn’t mention where he got it. Was he visiting some lab or did he get bit someplace some locals should be taking precautions?
(He’s retired, but I don’t know if he still has a presence in the industry or not, giving talks and doing visits.)
Most likely a mosquito bite. West Nile Virus isn’t uncommon in the Eastern US. While it’s not epidemic, it’s prevalent enough that you’d want to manage mosquito population and minimize your exposure to bites with long clothes or DEET bug repellent.
Am in NC and we’ve had multiple cases so far this year.
Here is the issue. Last several years we’ve had temperatures on the rise. 2023 was the hottest on record and 2024 is looking to be hotter.
We’ve had more rain as well in my area the last couple years and I am guessing the rest of the eastern seaboard is in the same boat.
I’ve seen numerous news posts, locally asking people to please dump any dog bowls, birdbaths, sources of water, etc weekly you may have in your yard (why you wouldn’t anyway I dunno).
I suspect we are in for a lot more of this in the near future as temperatures continue to rise.

Guess I didn’t realize it’s hitting humans on Long Island pretty well.

Yup. We’ve got cases of EEE here in New England.
Probably somewhere west of the Nile.
